The Big Sleep Is Back For 2021 With A TWIST!

The Big Sleep is back for 2021 with a TWIST!

This year you will understand why Alabaré’s flagship event, The BIG Sleep is going to be a little different. On Friday 5th March 2021, the Alabaré team is encouraging everyone to hold their own BIG Sleep, in fun, safe and interesting places so that people young and old can stand together, to help end homelessness.

Ordinarily Alabaré holds its flagship Big Sleep at Salisbury Cathedral and has been able to do so for the last 13 years, bringing hundreds of people together for the night to sleep out while raising vital funds and awareness of homelessness.  In a twist for 2021, the Alabaré fundraising team are asking people to still get involved, but by sleeping out at home, work or school, and joining an online community of fellow Big Sleepers.

Laura Knight, Community Fundraiser for Alabaré explains more;

“We love seeing people at our Big Sleep each year – we are grateful for the passion they have, like us, to truly make a difference to the lives of those living in the crisis of homelessness.

Covid regulations have made impossible for us to hold our annual event at the Cathedral next year but following the success our first Big Sleep at Home event this year, we are inviting people to swap their comfy bed for a sleeping bag for one night. To make it more fun, why not grab your blanket and build a den in your lounge, sleep in the bath or truly brave the elements and sleep under the stars?

When so many activities are on hold it is a fun way to spend an evening and by doing so, we are encouraging you to raise vital funds and awareness for our work with vulnerable people who desperately need our support.

We hope schools, community groups, churches and businesses will all get involved. One of the benefits of our Big Sleep at Home is that you can join in no matter where you are, so we are encouraging people around the country to join in. We’re planning some entertainment and some reflections to tune into on the night and we’d love you to share pictures so we can see some very unusual sleeping places.  We hope people enjoy taking part but most of all it’s thought provoking for any of us to give up our bed for the night, and sleep in an uncomfortable place, and remember how lucky we are that we’re only doing it for one night.  Together we can raise awareness and funds to help end the crisis of homelessness for good.”

Joining us through the evening online will be award-winning local author Barney Norris who will read a bedtime story. There will be survival den building tricks and tips with ex SAS Major Ken Hames, a virtual fun quiz with prizes, and Q&A with CEO Andrew Lord MBE, when you will hear from some of Alabaré’s incredible service users who have tragically experienced how devastating being homeless is.

By taking part in The Big Sleep at Home and fundraising for Alabaré, you will be supporting homeless and vulnerable people affected by the ongoing impact of Coronavirus. Over eight months this year, Alabaré has provided homes and support to over 1075 people across the South West and Wales.

Latest statistics reveal 778 deaths last year from homelessness, a 7.2% increase and the highest on record since records began in 2013. With increased unemployment and the end of rental eviction protection, it is anticipated these figures are only going to rise. * www.ons.gov.uk

Sadly, charities have seen fundraising event income diminish throughout the pandemic when events have had to be cancelled or postponed, at a time when more people need the service.
