Salisbury Veterans Settle Into New Home
We are celebrating the expansion of Wiltshire Homes for Veterans initiative this week thanks to a grant of £33,705 from the Wiltshire Armed Forces Covenant. Mike Hibberd is our Care & Support Manager for Veterans and had this to say of the expansion;
“We are really pleased that our Veterans have settled in to their new home, here on Wilton Road. This new house has provided us with the perfect environment to support Veterans. We are incredibly grateful to the Wiltshire Armed Forces Covenant for providing us with the means to create a quality and comfortable home environment which is so important for our Veterans to transition back to independent living.”
The model of accommodation and support that we provide for Veterans has been developed through their close partnership working with over a dozen major Armed Forces charities including the Royal British Legion, SSAFA and Help for Heroes. The majority of people who leave the Armed Forces make a successful transition to civilian society, but a significant minority struggle - either immediately or sometimes several years later. Our Homes for Veterans have been specifically created to help ex-Service men and women overcome the crises and obstacles that are preventing them from leading successful independent lives.
We opened their first Veterans Home in Plymouth, in 2009, and now five years on, are proud to say that we are the largest provider of dedicated accommodation for homeless Veterans of working age, outside of London. Apart from our homes in Wiltshire, we also run Homes for Veterans in Bristol, Plymouth, Weymouth, Hampshire and Gloucestershire. We are currently also expanding the initiative across Wales. Our homes offer Veterans the support they need to move on live more independently; gaining the skills they need to transition to their own home. Since our initiative started we have helped over 260 Veterans.
At Alabaré we underlined our commitment to the Armed Forces community earlier this year by signing the Ministry of Defence Armed Forces Corporate Covenant. The Corporate Covenant is a voluntary pledge made by businesses and charitable organisations who wish to publically demonstrate their support for the Armed Forces community.
