Our Wales Homes For Veterans Help Veterans Like Colin

Colin served with the Welsh Guards for 15 years, during this time he experienced active service in Afghanistan. It was during this tour he had seen close colleagues maimed, injured and lives lost. Colin returned home with severe psychological trauma as a result of the extreme danger and unrelenting threat that he had been exposed to. He was also struggling to cope with grieving his lost colleagues. His life fell apart and he spiralled into mental ill health and was diagnosed as suffering with PTSD. Colin was assessed by his Regiment and it was decided that he could not continue to work in the role that he was in. He was medically discharged and he returned home to his native North Wales.

Over the next few months the severe impact of Mental Ill Health took its full toll on Colin and he attempted to take his own life. He had lost all sense of self-respect and dignity and his personal and physical appearance became unrecognisable from the once proud Guardsman. He fell behind on payments and was evicted from his accommodation, he became street homeless. Colin eventually got the help he needed and was signposted to Alabaré’s Wales Homes for Veterans where he was able to access the help and support he needed.

Colin has a long journey ahead of him but after 8 months of support and accommodation he is showing all the positive signs and indications of a full and complete recovery.

Colin said;

“Alabaré gave me the lifeline that I needed to turn my life around. I am now feeling positive about the future.”
