Our Fantastic Volunteers
We would like to introduce you to Nicky. She is one of our volunteers who gives their time in our Glouchestershire Homes for Veterans. This is her story and why she wants to make a difference through volunteer:
Nicky worked for the Avon and Somerset Police during the 80s and into the mid 90s. She loved her job immensely and she thrived on the excitement of operating on the front line. ‘No day was ever the same’.
Nicky’s career was suddenly cut short. The police car she was travelling in collided with another which was involved in a high speed pursuit. She sustained some physical injuries and was admitted to hospital for three days. However it was the mental injuries that were to change her life irreparably. Overtime her symptoms were recognised by a mental health professional. She was diagnosed with PTSD and assessments were made in order to help her. She felt as if she could try to move on to live her life again.
She realises that PTSD is something that she has to live with so in order to turn a negative into a positive she has found solace in volunteering with Alabaré – being able to help and advise others like her. Nicky started to help the charity out in May last year. At first helping out in our Bristol Homes for Veterans house and then moving to our Gloucestershire Homes for Veterans. She says that volunteering, for her builds up her confidence, gives her a reason to get up in the morning and makes her feel useful. The help Nicky offers at our Homes for Veterans Gloucestershire is invaluable and her positivity is contagious.
