On Friday 7th July we had the honour of attending The High Sheriff of Wiltshire, Lady Marland's Summer Reception at Odstock Manor.
Lady Marland has chosen Alabaré to be one of the charities benefiting from her year of fundraising. Her prestigious Summer Reception saw around 200 people gather in the grounds of Odstock Manor for her charity fundraiser. The support Lady Marland is offering will help us to continue to help people like Max who found himself with nowhere to go after a family breakdown.
Max arrived at Alabaré's supported accommodation in Winter weighing only seven stone. He had just left hospital after recovered from liver failure, but with nowhere to go he was facing a life back on the streets. He had no contact with his family and all he cared about was alcohol, spending most of his money on cheap vodka and cider every day.
Max was referred to Alabaré by his local council and soon moved into our state of the art sheltered accommodation in Salisbury. With our support Max began to turn his life around.
“I didn’t really find myself until I got here. One of the doctors said to me at the hospital ‘If you keep on drinking the next time I see you, you will be in the morgue'. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy what I have been through, but that is what the drink does to you - just a horrible vicious circle. I have had so much support and compassion from Alabaré. I couldn’t find it from my family but I found it here. These people have done so much for me. They have been absolutely fantastic.”
Thanks to the support of Alabaré and our dedicated support team Max is now sober and back in touch with his family. With his health recovering, he plans on moving out of our accommodation and getting a place of his own.

On Thursday July 27th, staff, clients and family members gathered to remember two service users from our Old Sarum Development Centre, Matthew and Hugh, who had recently passed away. A bench, especially crafted by their friends and staff at Old Sarum, was dedicated in their names, in a service lead by our Senior Chaplain Keith Thomasson.
Andrew Lord our CEO was asked to pick up an extra special donation for Alabaré this month - a cheque for £1,500 from Rev Mike Wagstaff RN in a packed Kings Chapel, Gibraltar. The presentation was made in the presence of His Excellency, the Governor of Gibraltar, Lt Gen Edward Davis CB, CBE, KStJ and Commander British Forces Commodore Michael Walliker OBE RN. In addition to the regular congregation, as the service coincided with the WRNS 100th Anniversary event in Gibraltar, there were many retired WRNS in King's Chapel together with servicewomen currently in Gibraltar.
