Volunteers’ Week  1- 7June 2015

Like many charities Alabaré could not function without its loyal volunteers. This week we salute them all and pay special thanks to Mary Stevens in this edition of E-news and her 22 years of volunteering at our Trowbridge Drop-in Centre

Mary Stevens

Mary has devoted 22 years of her time to volunteering for us in Trowbridge, an astonishing amount of time and last Tuesday we recognised this with a lunch and presentation. Mary said ‘I’ve always had a good rapport with the people who have come in to see us – it is important to make them feel like they matter’.

Kelly Kelly our Senior Support Worker at the Drop-in Centre said 'It is people like Mary who make our job easier, she never judges anyone who comes through the door, her dedication to volunteering has been inspirational.

New Homes for Veterans in North Wales

Early June sees the opening of our first home in north Wales in the town of Llandudno Junction. This will shortly be followed by a property in Colwyn Bay and together they will provide 11 bed spaces for ex-military personnel who are homeless and in need of support whilst adjusting to civilian life. The team taking care of these Veterans will be David Oliver and Chloe McEniff – welcome on board!

Armed Forces Day 27/28 June 2015

Is a firm fixture in the Alabaré calendar, this year we are attending events in Bognor Regis, Bristol, Gloucester, Plymouth, Salisbury, Trowbridge, Weymouth, Cardiff and Colwyn Bay. Please look out in your local press for details of times of parades, church services and come and visit the Alabaré  Homes for Veterans stands. It will be a chance for you to find out more about the services we offer Veterans in their time of need and if you would like to do something to help us support Veterans in your local area you can register your interest on the day and we will be in touch.

‘Wig’gle it!

Is our latest social media campaign – we are asking Facebook and Twitter users to don a wig and post their picture up, the madder, the better! People are being encouraged to donate £3 using our Text to Give facility. Text the word HOMES to 70660.

Our Veterans take on The Cumbrian Challenge

On Friday 15 May, a team of four well prepared but nervous Alabaré Veterans drove from the West Country, with their support team, to Grasmere for the 2015 Walking with the Wounded (WWTW) Cumbrian Challenge. The Challenge is a lung-busting hike which can be walked or run over multiple fells around the rolling terrain which surrounds Grasmere. Teams are given up to 8 hours to complete the 29km route. Click to continue reading to see how they got on...
