Community Self-Build Agency President Stella Clarke CBE Steps Down

Dr Stella Clarke CBE, the tour de force behind the self-build for many years, has stepped down from her position of President of the Community Self-Build Agency Committee.

Established in the 1980s, the project has completed over 178 self-builds across the UK, providing multiple housing units and thousands of qualifications for disadvantaged and vulnerable members of the community, giving them opportunities to learn vital employment skills in the building trade.

In recent years the CSBA has focused on projects involving ex forces veterans, including the completion of our Leominster build in December 2020, and the latest development at Honicknowle, Plymouth.

Major (Ret’d) Ken Hames MBE FRGS FRSA, Chief Operating Officer for Alabaré Veterans Self-Build, said:

“Stella Clarke CBE was the driving force behind a nationwide initiative to make ‘community self-build’ a reality for many, who found themselves socially excluded.  Her tenacity and determination saw houses being built by communities pulling together, generating a unique sense of purpose and in many cases, hope.  We’d like to thank Stella for the last 15 years, where she has weaved more of her magic, by helping hundreds of veterans find their way back to independent living and employment. Stella continues to inspire us all and we will continue, as she put it, to build houses to build lives.”
