Homes not Streets - a Christian PerspectiveHomes not Streets

When people tell me that the Bible has nothing to do with politics, I ask them: "Which Bible are you talking about?" Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Alabaré Christian Care and Support has been offering help and practical care to those in need of a roof over their heads for over 25 years.  But now, for the first time, it is raising its head above the parapet and has written to MPs to draw attention to proposed legislation that, if unamended, will affect the lives of all those it supports – and could threaten the very existence of its homes and services themselves.

At the moment, those who have additional needs, receive payment above the local ‘market rate’ for Housing Benefit, recognising the extra cost of providing supported housing.  The Government is proposing that benefit should be capped at that much lower ‘ market rate’.

This will threaten not only Alabaré, but organisations up and down the land that help those that are most vulnerable transform their lives.

As Christians, our hope may be fixed on a heavenly kingdom.  But Jesus told his supporters that they were to be salt and light in this world now and to love their neighbour as themselves.  We all accept that this is true at an individual level (which is why so many of our staff see their work for Alabaré as Christian service and so many others support our work with individual donations).  But injustice and sinfulness can also lie in unfair systems and laws.  Many of the Old Testament prophets warned that God would judge Israel by how it treated those in most need.

So Alabaré is joining with other organisations to warn MPs of all parties against a potential injustice that will affect those who are most vulnerable in our society.

There is not a square inch of domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is sovereign overall, does not cry: ‘It is Mine!’ Abraham Kuyper, Dutch Theologian and Prime Minister.

The opening prayer said daily in the House of Commons when Parliament is sitting:

Lord, the God of righteousness and truth, grant to our Queen and her government, to Members of Parliament and all in positions of responsibility, the guidance of your

Spirit. May they never lead the nation wrongly through love of power, desire to please, or unworthy ideals but laying aside all private interests and prejudices keep in mind their responsibility to seek to improve the condition of all mankind; so may your kingdom come and your name be hallowed. Amen.
