What is The Big Sleep and why be involved?

The Big Sleep welcomes those who want to take a stand against homelessness. Since 2007 Alabaré has been running Big Sleeps at Salisbury Cathedral and have more recently expanded to other iconic locations so more people of all ages can join the Big Sleep community.

Participants pledge to raise vital funds to support Alabaré homeless projects and Alabaré Homes for Veterans. On the night you will be supported by an experienced team, you will hear from service users who have themselves experienced homelessness and you will be greeted by a warm drink and a breakfast bap in the morning.

Why

Alabaré supports over 1500 homeless people every year and has over 40 homes across the South West of England, and into North and South Wales. Your fundraising will make a huge difference to those who often have nowhere else to turn.

Together, let's end homelessness.

The Big Sleep Tower of London

Friday 22nd October - Saturday 23rd October 2021
Find out more!

This is your chance to sleep out at this iconic London venue and wake up to the sights of Tower Bridge and the City.  Never before have members of the public been allowed to stay overnight in the castle grounds so this is truly a unique opportunity, in a single act of compassion to help save lives.

The event promises to be a bone-chilling, powerful and yet humbling experience. You will sleep rough, in front of the Traitor’s Gate, with a view of Tower Bridge and HMS Belfast (not for the faint-hearted!) providing you with a taste of what it is like to bed down like a homeless person; albeit just for one night, knowing that in the morning you can return to your warm home and comfortable bed.

Sign up registration costs £10 per ticket and is available to those aged 14 years and over (under 18's need to be accompanied by an adult). Full information and frequently based questions are available on our Eventbrite page.

The Big Sleep at Home

The Big Sleep at Home

Friday 8th October - Saturday 9th October 2021

Last year made it impossible for us to hold our regular The Big Sleep in-person events, so building on the success of two Big Sleeps at Home we're turning this into an annual event to mark World Homeless Day and inviting younger supporters to join our community. So instead of joining us why not swap your comfy bed for a sleeping bag and grab your blanket and build a den in your lounge, sleep in the bath or truly brave the elements and sleep under the stars!

We will provide some entertainment and reflections to tune into on the night, which may include some well-known faces too! We will be encouraging you to share photos, if you wish, of your unusual sleeping places. Where will you choose to sleep?

Sign up registration is free and is available to those aged 8 years and over (under 18's need to be accompanied by an adult if sleeping outside). Full information and FAQs are available on our Eventbrite page.

The Big Sleep Spinnaker Tower

Friday 5th November - Saturday 6th November 2021

Alabaré's The Big Sleep Spinnaker Tower is a fantastic opportunity to join us and truly sleep amongst the stars. That's 110 metres up Portsmouth’s iconic landmark building sleeping overnight at the top of the tower! As the event also falls on Bonfire Night we are expecting a bird's eye view of the celebrations over the Solent which will add to the overall excitement.

Alabaré is seeking private groups (schools and corporations) to take on this unique opportunity at an iconic landmark! Available to those aged 14+ (under 18's need to be accompanied by an adult).

"It's 7:55, quick time check and then into sleeping bag. Ignore the rock under your hip. Temperature is dropping so try and get into a ball. 1am and traffic noise is finally stopping. Owls hooting. Getting colder. 4 am owls stop and birds take over. 5am and the traffic starts again. 7am time for tea and brekfast. For me one night only - for too many it's just one more night." Steve, Big Sleep Participant
