What is The Big Sleep and why be involved?

The Big Sleep welcomes those who want to take a stand against homelessness. For 14 years Alabaré has been running Big Sleeps at Salisbury Cathedral and have more recently expanded to other iconic locations so more people of all ages can join the Big Sleep community.

Participants pledge to raise vital funds to support Alabaré homeless projects and Alabaré Homes for Veterans. On the night you will be supported by an experienced team, you will hear from service users who have themselves experienced homelessness and you will be greeted by a warm drink and a breakfast bap in the morning.

Why

Alabaré supports over 1400 homeless people every year and has over 60 homes across the South West of England, and North and South Wales. Your fundraising will make a huge difference to those who often have nowhere else to turn.

"It's 9:55, quick time check and then into sleeping bag. Ignore the rock under your hip. Temperature is dropping so try and get into a ball. 1am and traffic noise is finally stopping. Owls hooting. Getting colder. 4 am owls stop and birds take over. 5am and the traffic starts again. 7am time for tea and breakfast. For me one night only - for too many it's just one more night." The Big Sleep at Home

Friday 7th October 2022

Building on the success of three Big Sleeps at Home, our annual sponsored event marks World Homeless Day and particularly invites younger supporters to join our community and fundraise for Alabaré's homes and services. So why not swap your comfy bed for a sleeping bag and grab your blanket and build a den in your lounge, sleep in the bath or brave the elements and sleep under the stars? Under 18s must be supervised.

Link to sign up coming soon.

Find out more!

Alabaré's Big Sleep at Spinnaker Tower is a fantastic opportunity to join us and truly sleep among the stars 110 metres up sleeping overnight at the top of Portsmouth's iconic tower! As the event also falls on Bonfire Night we are expecting a birds-eye view of the celebrations over the Solent which we are sure will add to the overall excitement and provide an incredible view.

Participants who are joining us pledge to raise a minimum of £100 for Alabaré's Homes for Veterans (£50 for anyone aged 14-18 years).

The Big Sleep welcomes all those who want to take a stand against homelessness by swapping their beds for sleeping bags, to raise funds and awareness for those who are forced to call the streets their home.

The Big Sleep Tank Museum

Date to be confirmed January 2023

In the Cold War Hall of The Tank Museum, you will sleep rough on the hard concrete floor, amongst tanks of the era, and other BIG sleepers with the same shared goal; to enable us to support homeless ex-Service personnel off the street. On the night you will hear an all-age appropriate talk from a resident tank expert, and stories about those who we have helped. Of course, you will also have the opportunity to chat with fellow sleepers over a hot bedtime drink and biscuits. At dawn, we will invite you to join us at the War Memorial in front of The Tank Museum for a moment’s reflection. A simple breakfast and hot drinks will be available to you before you leave. Participants must be 11 years of age or over at the time of the event.
