Spiritual well-being and listening
Our charity was founded by a local community of Christians who were inspired by their faith. You can read more about their story here.
Today we are a much larger organisation and welcome everyone, regardless of whether you have religious beliefs or not.
As part of the support we give you at Alabaré, we want you feel cared for both physically, mentally and spiritually. This does not mean that you need to have or share religious beliefs, only that you have the opportunity to talk about how you feel spiritually if this is helpful to you.
Our team of Chaplains
Throughout our charity we are lucky to have a team of volunteer Chaplains, led by our Senior Chaplain Keith Thomasson. Our Chaplains are many different ages and come from different backgrounds, with a huge variety of life experiences. Each of them is here to help care for, and support, us - our staff, volunteers and everyone in our homes and services. Most of our homes have a dedicated Chaplain working with them.
Most of the time you'll come across one of our Chaplains just popping into our home or service for a cup of tea and to catch up on what's happening. They often get involved in social activities such as gardening or cooking, playing sports or painting and decorating. They are there if you want to talk about your spiritual beliefs, or just if you fancy a chat or want someone to hang out with.
Talking to a Chaplain can be an opportunity to reflect on your journey so far. Of course, if you have a particular interest or concern that you would like to pray about, then we can help you with this. Also, if you would like to find out more about a religious faith or spiritual belief, then we can help you access a variety of courses.
All our current Chaplains are Christians. We are committed to working with people across all faiths or none, and to help us provide the best Chaplaincy service we can, we are recruiting a panel of faith advisors from all faith traditions.
If you would like to know more about our Chaplaincy service, please do get in touch, or ask your Key Worker or Line Manager for more information. You can also download one of our leaflets.
We have a monthly e-newsletter for our church supporters. If you would like to find out more about our Church Link and read our next edition, please click here.
The vision is to have a Christian chaplain, ordained or lay (from member churches of the World Council of Churches and/or Churches Together in Britain and Ireland) available for all involved in Alabaré. Alabaré, an ecumenical Christian Charity, is inclusive and welcomes people of all faiths and none. Chaplains across all our homes and services offer the following:
- Pastoral care and listening
- Care through the Spirituality initiative: Self Discovery through Life Conversations
- Support in faith development in the homes/services and in accessing local churches
- Prayer for, with, and alongside all involved in Alabaré.
- In addition, chaplains are encouraged to bring their own specific gifting and interests to their role eg sport, hospitality, gardening. Through such activities trust is built up and this enhances the opportunity to offer quality chaplaincy.
- An active liaison for Alabaré with local church communities.
Chaplains are supported by local managers and become an integral part of the local team through invitations to team and house meetings, and access to minutes of meetings.
Chaplains receive regular pastoral supervision with the Senior Chaplain that is tailored towards the exploration of key issues that impact them in their role. Further opportunities for theological reflection, learning and sharing in a community of practising chaplains happens three times a year as we gather for a day of resourcing at Riverside House in Salisbury.
Chaplains access the professional development opportunities offered for Alabaré volunteers, and are expected to undertake several e-learning modules including Safe Guarding.
All those interested in exploring volunteer chaplaincy should contact the Senior Chaplain, The Rev’d Keith Thomasson (firstname.lastname@example.org 07500 788 148)
