Gemma was 15 when her mum died of breast cancer. After her mother's death Gemma suffered abuse from her step father and she realised she had no one to turn to.
She ran away from home and was forced to start sleeping on her friends' sofa. Starved of love and care, Gemma met an older man who quickly became her boyfriend. She moved in with him and soon after found out she was pregnant.
Her boyfriend became increasingly aggressive and one day he slammed Gemma into the cupboard. Gemma was so scared she would end up homeless again so she stayed with her boyfriend.
"When Ellie was born I knew I had to go. He was so rough and I was scared. A friend told me to speak to the Council and they told me about Alabaré."
"Sue met us at the door. I knew we would be safe here. I am so glad that Ellie and I are safe."
Gemma moved into one of our specialist homes dedicated to mothers and their babies. Her support worker Sue listened to Gemma and helped her get the care she needed.
"We have a lovely room, and I'm learning everything I need to be able to manage the journey ahead. It's so wonderful to know that someone cares, and that Ellie and I have a future at last."
