Recycling... Alabaré's got it SORTED!

31st July 2007

With the issue of recycling continuously hitting the headlines in South Wiltshire, Alabaré’s proving they’ve got it SORTED!

SORTED!, which stands for Supported Opportunities in Recycling, Training and Employment Development, runs from the Barford Countryside Unit at Barford St Martin.  It was originally launched as Alabaré Recycling back in 2002 and was re-launched with its new name in June 2006.

In 2006 SORTED! made it even easier for people to help the environment by adding 9 new collection points, taking the total to 60.  They collected 1364 bags of foil and 724 bags of cans, producing 4.8 tonnes of foil and 1.8 tonnes of crushed cans.

The team has collection points for aluminium cans and foil dotted around South Wiltshire.  Each week they pick it up, professionally crush it at their workshop and sell it on to Freeths in Swindon.  They also collect old ink cartridges and mobile phones from local businesses.

The aim of the project is to help team members build self-confidence and learn new skills to help them into other employment or training.

SORTED! managed to secure the recycling for the 2006 and 2007 Larmer Tree Festival, which they were delighted with.  They have also been reaching out to the younger generations - they gave a talk at Hindon School assembly during Recycling Week.

In the last year they’ve taken on a new Recycling Co-ordinator who’s now NPTC trained and all of the recyclers continue to receive training on the different pieces of equipment.

Jackie Moore, Manager at Barford Countryside Unit, said “It’s hard to believe that a year has passed since we launched as SORTED!, the time has just flown by.  The team has achieved so much already and continues to go from strength to strength.”

“SORTED! is such a great project because it allows each of the team members to build their confidence, learn new skills and feel a real sense of achievement at the same time as doing their bit to help the environment.”

If you are a local business that would like SORTED! to pick up your old cartridges and mobiles or if you would just like to find out more about the team call Alabaré on 08450 78 68 08.
