Alabaré Alabaré - enabling a fulfilling life

Press Release

3rd December 2009

Putting his best foot forward for Alabaré

A member of staff at Mon Abri House has completed a 150-mile charity walk – and admits it's the hardest thing he has ever done.

Paul Harris took on the walking challenge to raise money for Mon Abri and the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal.
The route took him along carriageways, roads and even the moors taking in Plymouth, Exeter, Okehampton and Bideford, eventually returning to Plymouth after just five days. He braved horrendous weather conditions including rain and hail and gale-force winds.

And for an added test, he carried a 30lb rucksack on his back containing his kit.

He says "It was by far the hardest thing I have ever done. Switching from flat roads to hill climbs was tough going, especially as I was carrying that weight on my back. It felt like I was carrying the world on my back."

During the walk Paul says was touched by the levels of support. Royal Marine buglers from CTC Lympstone met him at Exeter Cathedral to provide a musical backdrop and Royal British Legion members provided accommodation and food en route. A standard bearer and members of the Crownhill and Devon county branch of the Royal British Legion also met him at the end of the walk at Crownhill Fort.

Paul says"The support was incredible. They have all been tremendous."

Carole Arnold, community fundraiser for Devon, praised Paul's efforts. Carole said: "The Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal is so appreciative of Paul's tremendous efforts of walking 150 miles in some pretty horrendous weather conditions. It was a real feat to undertake and he fulfilled the challenge and raised funds and the profile of the charity in style."

Funded by The Royal British Legion, Mon Abri provides accommodation and support to men and women who are experiencing difficulty after leaving military service. Staff offer help with a range of complex issues including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, drug and alcohol addiction, education, employment and life skills.
