November Network News
The clocks have gone back, and the nights are creeping in. As the weather turns colder, we ask that you take a moment to consider our winter appeals to help homeless and vulnerable people across the UK whose struggles get harder at this time of year. With Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day, just around the corner, we also stop and reflect on the incredible bravery and sacrifice of so many people during wars of the past and the ongoing struggles of today. We’ve got lots more to tell you about, so please read on to find out about the last month at Alabaré.
Cold Weather Appeal: Can You Help?
The cold weather is on its way. For most of us, this means wrapping up in our winter coats or popping the heating on at home, but for homeless and vulnerable people across the UK this is simply not an option and the colder weather will just bring further challenges to already difficult lives. We are delighted to announce that following the green light from the Planning Inspectorates, we’ve now completed the purchase on our South East Wales Homes for Veterans in Pontypridd.
“The new home will be a warm and welcoming place where Veterans can benefit from living with others who understand life in the Armed Forces, and where we can give them our professional support to help them build the skills they need to go on to successful lives within the community,” said Rachel McCartney, Wales Homes for Veterans Project Manager.
Pontypridd and Rhondda Cynon Taf have a proud history of supporting the Armed Forces Community. In 2012 Rhondda Cynon Taf Council launched its Armed Forces Community Covenant - a signed statement of mutual support and respect between Rhondda Cynon Taf’s communities and the servicemen and women - serving and retired - and their families who are based in the locality. Both the Royal Welsh and Welsh Guard Regiments have in recent years been granted The Freedom of the County Borough, the highest civic honour that can be bestowed.
We hope that Wales Homes for Veterans will become another link in this special bond, and give those who have served in our Armed Forces and since fallen on hard times, a home and the support they need to get back on their feet again.
Cardiff Half Marathon
The Cardiff Half marathon attracted more than 16,000 runners to the Welsh capital on the 5th October, and Heather from our Marketing & Fundraising department got involved, running on behalf of our Wales Homes for Veterans. She managed to complete the 13 mile challenge in just 1 hour and 57 minutes. Click here to read more.
If you’d like to show your support for our Welsh Veterans there’s still time to donate on Heather’s fundraising page: https://my.give.net/Cardiff_HM_Heather.
