Alabaré staff Commando Training Day
Alabaré staff have been finding out more about life in the Military first hand.
Those involved in the charity’s work with veterans attended a special training day held at the Royal Marine Commando Training Centre in Lympstone last month.
Alabaré organised the event in partnership with ProAction Development CIC to give staff an in-depth look at life in the Forces, ensuring that their Veterans Programme is offering the most effective support possible. Many of Alabaré’s Veterans Programme staff team already come from a services background, either directly or by family connection.
Around 13 members of staff, including senior managers, support workers and volunteers, were shown around the training centre and given a number of talks. Subjects included Being a Marine, rehabilitation, coaching and mentoring, the impact of operational tours of duty and welfare issues. They also visited the rehabilitation gym and sat down to lunch with the new recuits.
The day with the Royal Marines was followed up with a second day of reflection and discussion, looking at what had been learnt and how this could be used to help them in their every day work supporting ex-Service men and women.
“The training day with the Royal Marines was a huge success; everyone who took part agreed that the whole day had been thoroughly worthwhile and informative. Being given an insight into Military life will be of great benefit to those members of staff who will be working closely with those veterans who access our services. I would like to thank the Royal Marines for being such wonderful hosts and for sharing their thoughts and expertise with us.”
Said Janet Herring, Alabaré Senior Manager & Veterans Programme Leader
Alabaré has been supporting homeless and vulnerable veterans through its many projects and services for more that 20 years, but more recently the charity has opened supported housing projects that cater exclusively for ex-Service men and women.
Thanks to funding from, amongst others, The Royal British Legion, ABF The Soldiers Charity, RAF Association and The Society of Merchant Venturers, Alabaré now has six Homes for Veterans up and running - in Plymouth, Bristol and Weymouth.
Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans provide a unique combination of accommodation and support, enabling residents to access specialist help with a wide range of complex issues, which could include Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or drug and alcohol addiction. Residents also develop independent living skills to help them move on successfully.
