Local MP John Glen gets his hands dirty for Alabaré
Alabaré welcomed a special volunteer through its doors last week (Fri 28th Jan) – Local MP John Glen!
John Glen MP wanted to find out more about Alabaré and the many projects the charity runs in the local area, and what better way to do that than to step into their shoes for a day.
First off was a stint at Café Alabaré on Endless Street, a training café for vulnerable adults. Mr Glen rolled up his sleeves and got stuck in, working alongside the other trainees serving customers, preparing food and washing up.
Then it was on to the Salisbury Drop In Centre in Carmelite Way, where he met with staff and volunteers finding out more about the work that they do. He also spent time talking with service users about their experiences and what the Drop In Centre means to them.
He then finished his day off with a spot of admin work at head office.
The volunteering experience at Alabaré was organised to give Mr Glen a direct insight into the work that Alabaré does and the wide range of support and services the charity offers across the local area and beyond.
And Mr Glen will be going a step further to show his support for Alabaré when he digs out his sleeping bag and joins the charity’s annual Sleep Out at Salisbury Cathedral 0n 4th March.
“I have had an extremely profitable, informative and rewarding day, learning about the vital work that Alabaré does in Salisbury. My time at Café Alabaré and at the Drop In Centre in the Friary allowed me to get to know the volunteers and understand the challenges encountered by some of Alabaré’s service users. I look forward to maintaining a relationship with Alabaré during my time as MP although it is with some trepidation that I look forward to the Sleep Out on Friday 4th March!” John Glen MP
